Transport for London: Strategic Review of Equalities

We were commissioned to provide, in partnership with a well established transport consultancy, a strategic review of equality and inclusion in Transport for London (TfL). The brief was to look at the substantial amount of equality and inclusion work being undertaken in TfL in the context of expected developments in equalities, in London, and in transport over the next few years.

We used our wide ranging experience of TfL to inform our work. We have, for instance:

Transport for London: Cycling on Greenways

Equality Works was invited by TfL to assist with a detailed and qualitative equalities impact assessment of the plan for Cycling on Greenways and to consider the needs of different groups of Londoners who are users or potential users of Greenways.

This was a focused consultation activity, arising from the initial screening, which identified that the main potential for adverse impact in the plan relates to disabled people and others with mobility impairments, e.g. the very young and their carers, and older people.

UNISON : Single Equality Scheme

The purpose of UNISON’s Equality Scheme is to make sure that equality is promoted in everything the union does. They believe equality should be at the heart of the union, written into their rules and into their objectives and priorities. However, they recognised that they did not systematically check the equalities impact of everything they did or evaluate how well they were achieving their vision of equality.

Planning Advisory Service: Equality and Diversity Case Study

In Spring 2008 the Planning Advisory Service (PAS) commissioned Equality Works to produce an equality and diversity case study. In order to provide accessible services and create inclusive environments, PAS recognised that planners need to understand the needs and aspirations of diverse communities in their local area. The commissioned good practice case study was, therefore, required to focus on how planners can routinely and systematically consider the impact of the plans they make on local communities.

Law Society of Scotland: Good Practice Guide

Equality Works was commissioned to carry out research and consultation to inform the production of forthcoming guidance for solicitors on equality and diversity.

By conducting a literature research and consulting within the Society and involving its partners/practitioners/customers/equality groups we were able to identify key equality issues. Furthermore, we supplemented existing statistical data by adding a qualitative and up to date element regarding equality issues.

Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment: Development of Equality Scheme

Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) commissioned Equality Works to work with them on the development of their Equality Scheme. They wanted a Scheme that would not only demonstrate best practice but also support their aim of providing clear leadership on equality and inclusion and using their influencing role to promote these issues within the profession.

During the first phase of development we focused on CABE as an employer and our team carried out the following activities:

BBC: Gender Equality Scheme

Equality Works was commissioned by the BBC in March 2007 to undertake a consultation to inform the development of their Gender Equality Scheme.

The BBC had designed an online consultation questionnaire and arranged four focus groups to be held across the UK. Equality Works designed and facilitated the focus groups; analysed the responses to the online questionnaire; and produced a report summarising the findings of both strands of the consultation.

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council: Corporate Guidance Handbook on Equalities Monitoring

Stockport Council commissioned us in the autumn of 2005 to produce a corporate guidance handbook on equalities monitoring in service provision.

The aim of the guidance was to promote a consistent approach to the equalities monitoring of service provision in Stockport Council. The target audience included managers and officers responsible for the development and operation of monitoring systems and those who are in a position to change service provision in response to data.

London Borough of Hillingdon: Annual Workforce and Equalities Monitoring Report

Equality Works and the London Borough of Hillingdon have been working in partnership for the last six years to develop and produce the council’s Annual Workforce and Equalities Monitoring Report.

Servite Houses: Review of Equalities Scheme

Servite Houses are one of the UK’s larger housing associations, providing 18,000 homes for over 30,000 people across the UK. Following a competitive tender process, we were invited in spring 2008 to deliver a range of Equality and Diversity focused services to support the organisation.
