Equality and diversity are at the heart of the NHS strategy, as organisations seek to meet their legal requirements and where possible exceed them. As the largest employer in the UK, as well as developing and delivering services centred on patient needs, the NHS is keen to attract, develop and retain the right staff.
Equality Works is pleased to have helped many organisations in the health sector meet these challenges. This has enabled them to deliver on the NHS national agenda on equality and social inclusion, as well as progress the organisation’s own equality agenda. This helps to ensure compliance with legislation and statutory requirements as well as mainstreaming equality and diversity across all areas.
We were commissioned by NHS North of Tyne to carry out an Equality Impact Assessment on the development of a new emergency care facility, with the aim of identifying and exploring the risks and issues relating to equality and considering how the opportunities to promote equality through the proposed development could be maximised.
The proposal was put forward by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and comprised three elements:
Equality Works was commissioned to carry out an Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) on the development of World Class Commissioning (WCC) in NHS Waltham Forest. After discussion, it was decided that we would use EqIA methods and ideas to comment on NHS Waltham Forest’s progress towards WCC; specifically to review the Commissioning Strategy Plan (CSP) in relation to equalities.
Equality Works was commissioned by NHS East Midlands in October 2008 to undertake a baseline assessment of all 24 NHS organisations (including the Strategic Health Authority) within the East Midlands area in relation to Equality and Human Rights. The main aim of this project was to assess the infrastructure and consistency throughout the organisations, with a focus on the structures for managing equalities inside trusts and to make recommendations to further the agenda across the reg
Equality Works has a long standing relationship with London Deanery and has run a wide range of training programme for their staff from Board level downwards. In 2007 Equality Works was asked by the Deanery to produce the script for an e-learning programme which would be available on their website as part of a modular programme for Clinical Teachers. The module was called ‘Diversity, Equal Opportunities and Human Rights’.
Equality Works were commissioned to provide equality impact assessment (EIA) training for managers from the provider and commissioning arms of the PCT. This included managers responsible for public health, corporate services and commissioning as well as service managers and practitioner leads.
The course was tailored to the primary care setting and local context using a training needs analysis process which included: information from desk research, interviews with managers and an EIA assessment tool to identify current organisational arrangements.
Equality Works were commissioned to carry out an initial audit of equality and diversity strategy and policy at the Trust. The aim was to identify existing good practice as well as priorities and opportunities for further development. This involved desk research and document review as well as telephone interviews and consultation with key personnel, to produce a report summarising key findings and a range of practical recommendations.
We worked with Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust providing introductory training on Equality Impact Assessments to senior managers.
We subsequently undertook an audit to make recommendations as to how the Trust could:
