Housing

By working with a range of clients in this sector, Equality Works has developed a clear understanding of the challenges they face. The Regulatory Code requires organisations to “demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunities” and most have policies and action plans regarding race, gender and disability equality in place. However, the real challenge is to ensure this approach to equality and diversity is helping to improve business performance.

Equality Works is helping clients in this sector to develop outcome-focused action plans, to develop better and higher quality services and to direct limited resources more effectively. In short, Equality Works is helping its clients to make a measurable difference to their business performance.

Our work with the Contour Housing Group, one of the largest registered social landlords in the North West, and with Ealing Homes illustrate the results that can be achieved.

Case studies:

St Mungo’s: Harassment and Bullying

St Mungo’s are a national charity providing housing and support for homeless people. As part of a pilot project, we designed and delivered a series of two-day training courses for managers and staff, based on the following themes:

Servite Houses: Review of Equalities Scheme

Servite Houses are one of the UK’s larger housing associations, providing 18,000 homes for over 30,000 people across the UK. Following a competitive tender process, we were invited in spring 2008 to deliver a range of Equality and Diversity focused services to support the organisation.

Ealing Homes: Development of a Single Equality Scheme

An equality scheme is a plan that outlines a public body’s action to address the requirements of the three public duties that cover race, disability and gender to proactively promote equality over a specific year period. All three duties seek to mainstream equality into all aspects of an organisation’s policy and decision making.

Ealing Homes is an Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) which manages, on behalf of Ealing Council, approximately 18,000 council tenants and leaseholders properties; providing tenancy and leasehold housing services.

Contour Housing: Equality Impact Assessment Training

With over 20,000 properties across the North West, Contour Housing Group is one of the region’s largest registered social landlords. Equality Works has recently supported Contour in its work to embed Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) processes throughout the group structure.

I was very impressed with the input of Equality Works in helping to resolve the immediate issue and provide training and consultancy to ensure it was less likely to recur.
