Equality Works is proud to have a number of high profile clients in the transport sector, including London Underground, Transport for London and London Midland. Transport is a priority issue for equality groups, and is therefore a very important sector for us.
Equality Works has delivered high quality equality and diversity consultancy and training that makes a positive difference to the business performance of these clients.
In addition, Jane Farrell, joint founder and Chief Executive of Equality Works has received an award from the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) London. The award recognises the outstanding contribution Jane and Equality Works have made to the aims and success of WTS London in advancing professional development opportunities for women.
The Equality and Inclusion agenda is paramount to London Underground’s (LU) mission “to be a world class tube for a world class city”. It sits well with its strategic objectives for customer service, people and stakeholders. In order to meet LU’s mission, a number of projects were put in place to improve service delivery and people management. The Managing Diversity Competency Programme (MDCP) was one of these projects. Its aim was to transform the organisational culture and equip managers with the skills to implement the necessary changes.
The groundbreaking ‘Ending Harassment’ campaign at London Underground was triggered by some high-profile industrial tribunal cases concerning harassment, and internal research indicating that bullying, and sexual and racial harassment were issues of serious concern for staff and managers. Senior management identified that a robust organisational solution was needed.
We were commissioned to provide, in partnership with a well established transport consultancy, a strategic review of equality and inclusion in Transport for London (TfL). The brief was to look at the substantial amount of equality and inclusion work being undertaken in TfL in the context of expected developments in equalities, in London, and in transport over the next few years.
We used our wide ranging experience of TfL to inform our work. We have, for instance:
Equality Works was invited by TfL to assist with a detailed and qualitative equalities impact assessment of the plan for Cycling on Greenways and to consider the needs of different groups of Londoners who are users or potential users of Greenways.
This was a focused consultation activity, arising from the initial screening, which identified that the main potential for adverse impact in the plan relates to disabled people and others with mobility impairments, e.g. the very young and their carers, and older people.
Transport for London (TfL) has recently been awarded Level 5 of the Equality Standard for Local Government (ESLG). TfL is by far the largest and most complex organisation to meet this standard and one of very few who have achieved Level 5, which is externally assessed in a rigorous way.
Equality Works was commissioned to build capacity in London Underground, so that they could themselves deliver the award-winning programme in managing diversity (MDCP) that had been delivered by Equality Works consultants over the previous three years.
I was very impressed with the input of Equality Works in helping to resolve the immediate issue and provide training and consultancy to ensure it was less likely to recur.
